It is thought that Bakeneko were vengeful cats that came back from the dead to curse their owner. In the old beliefs of Japan, cats older than seven years sometimes attempted to kill their owners. Bakeneko look like ordinary cats, however; they have the ability to shapeshift into humans and dance. They have also been known to speak in a human's common tongue, which was usually Japanese. The older the Bakeneko, the more powerful they become. Some Bakeneko can be pranksters and cause mischief wherever they go, however; there are also those that enjoy being with their human families too.
It is important to note that Bakeneko are often very easy to confuse with Nekomata!
