Kitsune are a large part of Japanese culture. It is said that some are the messengers of the God/Goddess Inari. There are even shrines built in their honor to persuade Inari-sama to give favor. Kitsune are extremely powerful and intelligent beings. However; even with all of their power and smarts, they still sometimes enjoy pranking others for sport.
There are several different kinds of kitsune, from rather they serve Inari-sama or not, down to their elemental classification. A kitsune's age can usually be told by the number of tails they possess as they grow one tail every 100 years. The most common kitsune mentioned in stories have one, five, seven and nine tails. The more tails they possess, the more powerful they are. Usually, once a kitsune grows it's ninth tail, it's hair/fur will turn either white or gold and they gain almost God-like powers and would become a being known as Kyuubi no Kitsune which literally means nine-tailed fox.
Zenko Kitsune are considered to be more benevolent than their Nogitsune counterparts. The Zenko serve under Inari-sama and posses the power to ward off evil and serve as guardian spirits. While the Nogitsune are considered more mischievous and sometimes malicious as they don't follow or serve under any deity.
