They are created for many reasons, most seem to be helping their master(s) with their magick.  Some are created to run their master's errands for them or do the menial work so their master can focus on what they need to do. Most are not asked to be created! This does not mean that they harbor ill will toward their creator, for they have been given a second chance to live.
The Homunculus that I have been working with was created when he perished in the astral.  A group of people came together to perform a ritual to confine his spirit in a host form.
This is how the Homunculi I work with are created. A coven of witches, mages or other magickal beings use a host body, which can sometimes be the beings original body and attach their soul back to the body. Once this happens, however, the Homunculus usually has limited freedom and is most times condemned to a life of servitude. Once the people that brought the Homunculus back to life perish, the Homunculus roams the astral looking for a new master to serve. Although a Homunculus enjoys serving a Master, it doesn't make them a slave and they do have the ability to refuse a request if they don't wish to fulfill it.

A Homunculi's loyalty should never be questioned. They only ever wish to serve their keeper and to see them happy, for it was that purpose they were given life once more.
Some Homunculi can appear as pieced together bodies, much like Frankenstein's creation. Not all of them look like this though and many others have nearly pristine bodies.. They can have mix-matched skin tones along with varying shades of hair or different eye colors. A few that I have interacted with have had scars along their necks that never seem to go away no matter how long they've been 'alive'. However, no matter of their looks, these beings are beautiful companions that only ever wish to serve and help their keeper.
