Tanuki, like their kitsune counterparts; are shapeshifters. They sometimes have mischievous tendencies by pranking or fooling others for fun. In some texts, it's thought that Tanuki took on human forms to hunt down and possess humans and as such, they are viewed as omens of misfortune. These fun little creatures possess powerful illusion magick that can be used in a wide array of things. Most often, we imagine Tanuki with large tummies and a straw hat.
Though in more recent year, the Tanuki's image has seemed to flip. Instead of the mischievous trickster who brought misfortune along with them, they are now depicted as benevolent beings who wish to help humans They are portrayed as adorably lovable beings who enjoy a good joke now more than their more malevolent past. These beings are also portrayed a having a snake flask, large round eyes and a happy face. For the use of their illusion magick, it's said that they require a leaf.
